Underneath All This Is A Vague Unease Regarding Mortality

I had strange dreams last night that I actually remembered upon awaking. It happens less and less often these days, remembering. It’s like losing a very valuable part of myself.

The dream started off with me residing in some kind of high-fantasy world of magic and mystery. It was almost as if my family and friends and coworkers had been transported into the world inhabited by my novel. I was somehow both character and creator; I took a meta-step back at one point and completely re-oriented the world map by ninety degrees, after which I manifested griffin wings on my back and flew away.

My dream then changed, I was visiting Venice with my husband. I’ve been to Venice, so I know what it looks like, but the hotel and the river below looked nothing like Venice, and I keep dreaming about this exact same location repeatedly, a bridge and barrier and cobblestones and side streets and tall buildings of quaint design that obscure the sky. I’ve been dreaming about this place since #summersixteen, again and again. Last night it was Venice. Some nights it’s Toronto, or Boston, or Chicago.

I wonder if anyone else also dreams of an unfamiliar place over and over again.

Edge of Reality

Today is one of those days where I don’t know where I am.

I drove to work and as the sun came up to my right, the clouds started to glow red and pink and purple, texturized with airplane contrails. I stared at the colours and thought, we were meant to be free, we were meant to fly. But I was surrounded by hundreds of others like me, trapped in small metal boxes, on our way to even bigger boxes of glass and wood and steel.

I drove by a plain sign that said Toronto Warehouse Outlet and grew confused for a moment. I’m in Toronto? Yes, I’m in Toronto. This is not New York or Vancouver or London or Reykjavik. Something so familiar to me was, for a second, wholly unfamiliar. Where is my mind going? What other lands has it been travelling to?

I thought, I need more coffee. I took a big swig from my travel mug.

I’m now old enough that I can look back at the breadth of my life and see an almost infinite amount of decisions and choices that were made. I see an infinite number of parallel universes, all the roads not travelled. Then I spend my spare time wandering other roads I can never travel, the ones that involve spaceships and ancient magic and flying like a bird. At night, my mind fuses the two together. I’m living in Accra as a writer and a part time real-estate agent, when suddenly espers emerge from the ground and wage war on humankind.

I’ve been obsessed with the end of the world lately. It started in such a silly way. I was watching an LP for Final Fantasy XIII-2 months ago and I found myself weirdly & excitedly haunted when Serah visited Noel’s world, its grey dunes and roving monsters and dying sun. Imagine being the last person alive. Imagine living on the dead husk of a planet with only shadows and memories to keep you company.

There is a hairline fracture that separates us from the fantastical. Those early morning hours, when my mind hasn’t quite locked onto reality, I peer through a cloudy film and squint at the layers of the world. We are somebody else’s storybook. The storybook is one stroke away from coming to life. Who am I? Where is my mind going?

Recurrence

I've had this dream before, that I had to save a bunch of civilians from a mafioso style attack coming in from the streets into some kind of scientific/technical building with grand staircases and boiler rooms and silos. I was supposed to take them to the furthest point away from the gunfire, some dark room with a heavy steel door, and just as the bad guys open it up, backup arrives and the cops save the day.

It was supposed to be the same dream, but this time before I can take the civilians to the dark room to hide, the bad guy finds us early and corrals everyone into a large auditorium. I'm trying to negotiate that they let the hostages go. I can't fight because I'm outnumbered, and I don't want innocents caught in the crossfire. The second in command henchman is using some kind of high tech scanner to figure out where the ladychief of police is, whether she's gotten into the building yet. The scanner pings, she's nearby. Very nearby. In front of us. She's been under a cloaking device masquerading as the head of the mafia. He smiles and it's not his smile, it's the smile of righteous victory. The illusion is revealed and all the cops under her watch drop their cloaks as well, taking on the bad guys. They are in disarray and shock, can't cohesively fight back against us. I'm fighting too. I chase. I web-sling. I capture. Whipping through yellow-gold corridors and balconies, backwards on the path I took to hide the civilians. I'm a masked superhero. I'm Spider-girl. I keep fighting long into the night and quietly slip away when I know the cops have things under control. I swing on webs to a hotel room where my husband is staying. It's the middle of the night and he's been up worried where I am. I have to shower and sleep and get up in 5 hours for my regular day job. I take the mask off and realize that someone has followed me, now my family is in danger...

I'm walking next to what once was a field. Now it's being excavated for land development. An office building, a condo, whatever. I keep walking. Forests. Thin trees that offer a multitude of paths to weave through. I keep walking. A beach, a lake. A boardwalk with quaint jewelry and art shops. I know exactly where to go if I want to find the most beautiful turquoise necklace. I've had this dream before. I've always had this dream before.

Dreams I've Had Recently

Lots of travelling. Sneaking through high tech facilities. Just... walking on my own.

Once it was summer, then it turned into winter, a sort of nuclear winter, as war erupted across the earth thanks to some kind of supernatural threat that had only been alluded to in an indie viral podcast. I remember embers, tanks, creeping through ashy burnt buildings. Then I was on the moon, on a research facility, and they had turned James Franco into a lethal lizard-monster determined to wipe out humanity.

Not everything is so fantastical. I've been dreaming about being downtown a lot lately. It's not Toronto, never quite Toronto, more like Toronto of the future. The shops are bigger, the traffic is busier, the subways are more complicated (more like The Tube), the PATH is even grander than before. But there's still endless construction that drives us all nuts, and the street meat tastes just as delicious.

Reality affects my dreams. Right after Pride weekend, I dreamed that my straight BFF had decided to date a girl instead. I was judgey, not for the obvious reason one would suspect, but because this other girl was an interloper to our circle and quite frankly not good enough for my BFF.

I still dream about going back to school, but after so many years and due to unflappable logic, my brain has realized that I can't seriously buy into being in high school when I am 35+ years old. So I've started dreaming that I am a teacher at the school, or a teacher's aide. I'm wandering halls keeping the peace, or I'm helping the school band, or I'm coaching the kids in the school play. Sometimes I go back to university, which is a lot more reasonable, except for the part that in reality I wouldn't physically go to the school, not when we've got online classes and continuing ed.

Sometimes it's just fragments of scenes. I'm getting dressed for a party, shoved into a tiny little stall. I'm trawling through white wedding gowns, hoping no one notices my nostalgia. I'm trying to navigate of maze of escalators in a building that's on fire.

It's harder for me to remember my dreams as I get older, they fade away faster, the details aren't as bold and bright when I wake up. But just trying helps, being aware helps. Here's to hoping there's more compelling tales to come.

Pre-Hogwarts Premonition!

When I was a teenager, I somehow acquired a CD with a Tchaikovsky compilation on it: Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. Let me tell you, if that CD had been a record I would have wore the grooves out, haha. I liked listening to music for an hour or so before bed and that CD was one of my favourites, especially the Nutcracker songs, I basically memorized every song. One night, I listened to the full Nutcracker Suite and drifted off to sleep right after, and had a dream that my high school decided to organize a ball during Christmas, and all the girls dressed up in huge Victorian hoop dresses with lots of ribbons and tulle and satin. Mine was a pale blue, like Cinderella’s gown in the Disney movie. I remember in the dream we had to dance to Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers” and I was freaked because I didn’t actually know how to waltz but managed to get through it anyway.

I just remembered this dream today and thought: “Wait... isn’t that basically the Yule Ball from the Harry Potter books?!” I DREAMED IT FIRST! :P

Where Once Was Earth...

I had a strange dream a couple weeks ago that continues coming back to my memory for reasons unknown. Here’s the lowdown...

In my dream, my family and I are all together on a space shuttle/pod orbiting the earth. We monitor the controls periodically to make sure that everything’s on course, but otherwise we’re just living out in space for no presumable reason. The whole time we’re up there, I’m comforted by the fact that I can see Earth right out the viewing window, but being in space still makes me incredibly uneasy. (I’m a Capricorn; give me solid ground or give me death!)

Then one day my worst fear is imagined. I can’t remember if one of my siblings accidentally knocked the controls or if someone was manipulating everything from Earth, but suddenly the ship begins to accelerate and change course, and we are streaming through space as blue-green contrails of stars streak by. When we finally manage to get the space craft to stop moving, we’ve traveled light-years away from our holding orbit... and the goddamn ship doesn’t have an interstellar map to show us which way we went or how to get back. I can’t remember if we ended up traveling to another galaxy or just another star system, either way it was really damn far. I remember when the ship finally stopped and I looked out the window and all I could see was a giant grey nebula in the distance and a dark brown planet... the profound feeling of being lost, alone, displaced, adrift, etc. was terrible.

The rest of the dream turned out sort of oddly. Somehow me and my siblings beamed down to the brown planet and found it to be inhabited by a race of vicious aliens that sort of looked like a cross between Predators and Zerg. Yeah, big do not want, especially the giant razor-claws for hands thing. D: We were sneaking around one of their castles trying not to get caught, and we found this flight of stairs on the outside of a turret that would lead us to the ground, but as we started running down it, we realized that there were guards at the bottom and guards hot on our heels. We were trapped. Except I was like “no, we’re not trapped, we can jump off these stairs from 50 feet up and fly over to that bridge and get back to the ship”. And of course my siblings were like “um, what??” But there was no time to explain to them that we were in a dream, so I just linked my arms with theirs told them to jump... and we started to plummet to the ground. But I increased my willpower and soon our decent stopped, and linked together we floated upwards to the bridge that led us back to the ship.

I woke up soon after that. Anyways, it's the part where the ship starts to zoom away from Earth that freaked me out the most, and that's the part I keep remembering. Of course. :P

Nightvaleian Non-Nightmares

I think Welcome to Night Vale is finally getting to me!

Last night I had a dream that I was vacationing at a beach and some kids were jumping around on these giant rocks that were half-submerged in the lake. I was apparently kind of lucid dreaming because I knew that the two rocks furthest out in the water weren’t rocks, but were actually giant zombie water creatures. They looked like Lovecraftian whale-kodama if that makes any sense. Anyway the moment the kids jumped on the last rock, three or four of these creatures woke up and stood fully upright in the waters and started speaking in very cheerful English. They said they wanted everyone in the city to gather on the beach in the evening and they would set off fireworks and sing us the glorious ancient songs of their kind. Since it was a bit of a tourist city, lots of people were excited about this and started camping out on the beach. However, I was rooming with a couple of friends who had moved to the city two years ago and they knew that where they were from weird = bad. The beach house that we were staying in had a special room that I had never gone into, but I always noticed it because it had weird patterns and textured stuff on its door and the outer walls. So my friends were like “yeah no, when those things start singing, get in this room and don’t leave until the sun rises the next day.” And because I was kind of lucid dreaming, I knew that was because when the whale-kodama started singing, anyone who could hear it would go insane and their brain would dissolve and their skin would fall off. Swell.

So as the evening approached the creatures’ booming voices appeared again and they presented the fireworks without a hitch. At this point all the tourists were having fun outside and the locals had disappeared. Me and my friends were already holed up in the secret room, but it had a sliding glass door that opened up right to the boardwalk, so when we saw some frantic homeless locals freaking out we let them into our room of safety at the last minute. Then the whale-kodama’s started this weird humming/chanting type thing and all you could hear was terrible, terrible screams outside. However, in my dream this was not as nightmarish at it sounded; in true pseudo Night Vale-esque fashion, we spent some time getting to know the thankful hobos we rescued, and one of them even baked us a delicious hobo pie while we waited for the terror outside to end. Mmm... pie.

It's All Coming Back To Me Now

Slowly but surely, a change is coming into my life... I’m starting to dream at night again.

Let me explain. For starters, I always dream, that’s never changed since I was a wee one. And my dreams have never really been average, but quite vivid, fantastical, lucid, and extremely easy for me to remember in great detail upon waking. Seriously, my subconscious has come up with epic House MD episodes that would have put David Shore to shame. ;)

But I noticed that around the time I turned 30, my dreams changed. They became a lot more boring for one; dreaming about working in the office or watching TV with the family really doesn’t compare to dreaming that you’ve runaway with fairies to an alternate dimension and chilled in Father Time’s garden along the way. Not only did they become more mundane, but I couldn’t even remember them once I woke up, only vague feelings of mediocrity lingered behind.

I assumed it was just a complication of getting older, my brain just wasn’t as sharp as it used to be. Then, about a month ago, I changed my sleeping patterns. Basically, I got more of it haha. As opposed to going to bed around 11:30pm-12am every weeknight, I committed to going to bed at 10:30pm instead. Not only did I noticed I’d be far less tired in the morning, but gradually my dreams have gone back to being grand and vivid and epic. It’s not completely the same as it used to be (I’m still having issues remembering details when I wake up) but it’s definite progress towards a place I want to be in.

I never realized how important my epic dreams were to me until they started to fade away. Last night I dreamed that it was like 200 years in the future and I was canoeing down some Vietnamese river with a group of grumpy rebels working to repel our evil robot space-lords. And then there was a final showdown between our group’s hero and the head bad guy, and our hero killed the head bad guy... and then was somehow crowned the prophesized king of the robot space-lords and turned to evil. Which is when I woke up. How unreal, my brain is awesome. :D

I Dreamed A Dream Of Asian Sensations

I know, it’s been a while. But I needed a place to blab about this hilarious dream I had last night.

In my dream, my sister and I somehow won a contest where we could tag along with CL from the Kpop group 2NE1 while she travelled to various young girl’s houses all over South Korea in an attempt to find the group’s fourth member as part of reality show. Yes, for some reason my dream took place in the early 2000’s but me and my sister were our current age. The group only consisted of Minzy, CL, and Park Bom, no Dara yet, so technically I already knew the outcome haha. We were on this tour bus with CL and 10 other excited Korean fangirls who also won the contest, when we pull up to this huge mansion. An older man answers the door and he’s like “oh you must be here for my son... G-Dragon.” LMAO 4EVER.

Anyway Ji-yong aka G-Dragon swags downstairs to meet CL and there’s friendly hugs and he’s like “yo girl, I found the perfect fourth member for 2NE1, lemme get on the bus and direct you to her house, I’mma give her a call and let her know you’re coming with your fans and cameras.” So he gets on the bus with us all and there’s so much Korean being spoken that me and my sister are kind of lost, but everyone is being really cute and perky so we’re enjoying ourselves regardless haha.

We get to Dara’s house and GD does the introductions between her and CL as we all cram into her living room. We can tell she’s nervous but she just sits down at a piano and starts playing AND singing at the same time. It’s some Korean song but about two lines in, me and my sister give each other a look that says “wait, why do I know this tune?” In fact I start humming along and all the Korean fangirls are giving me weird looks like “how does this Indian Canadian girl know this?” Anyway, CL is clearly impressed with Dara’s singing and after she’s done they just start chatting like they’re old friends and then CL points out that I was humming along with the song, so me and my sister are like “we know this song! There’s an English version! Maybe you guys stole it?” and the conversation continues in stilted English and we’re talking about how both Korea and India have a history of stealing popular English tunes and inserting their own words, hahaha!

Then CL invites Dara to come on the bus with us back to Seoul and on the way we stop at a wildlife preserve and GD ends up wrestling an alligator. The end. :D

The Stuff Movies Are Made Of

You guys have to hear about the dream I had last night!

In this dream I was back in university, going to school at Ryerson, but one of my current coworkers was my best friend and we hung out together. We were walking around downtown and we came upon a period movie being filmed, and we spontaneously decided to sneak in by posing as craft services or something like that. We walk in carrying these big pitchers of water we snagged and then we end up sitting at a table chatting to all these high and mighty British actors when security realized we were gate crashers and grabbed us to escort us off the set. So we got thrown out and we had a laugh about it but as we were walking away down the sidewalk, I felt like someone, maybe security, was following us.

Eventually we made our way into the subway and when we got down there, we realized there was some sort of political protest going on. I believe there were people actively protesting Rob Ford's motion to destroy Transit City. :P Anyway, I got really into it and started leading the rally with all kinds of loud chants when a bunch of conservative jerks took offense and shoved me while I was on the subway platform. I stumbled and fell onto the very edge of the platform and if I had leaned back I would have fallen onto the tracks and gotten electrocuted or whatever. But just as I teetered on the edge, the guy who had been following me from the movie set appeared from out of the crowd. I told him to help me and he pulled me away from the edge.

The guy was none other than this fine gentleman:

Oh my gosh Mos Def I love you!

So after he saved my freaking life, Mos Def offered me his arm and said he'd escort me home. He told me how he'd been watching me sneak into the movie set and thought I was awesome for being so ballsy. I pretty much spent the entire walk home looking at him like this:

And then I was suddenly sitting in class with a surprise test I hadn't studied for. Eventually I just threw the test in the garbage and left the classroom, hahahaha.
